Congratulations Meryl!

Posted by Ross Aug. 15, 2007 @ 6:06 PM EDT

From September 2005 to June 2006 I was a teacher at Livingston High School in Livingston, NJ. One of the classes I taught was AP Computer Science, and one of my APCS students was Meryl Federman.

Meryl recently participated in the Jeopardy Teen Tournament and won the whole thing! This surely comes as no surprise to any of her teachers - she's one smart cookie. Not only did she win, but she went from 3rd place (and no money) after the first day to winning by $1. Wow.

Congrats to you Meryl.

Wow, to think you taught a jeopardy winner... Did you ask her to get Trebek's autograph for you?

Aug. 17, 2007 | 8:53 AM Ross responds:

I like Jeopardy, but not THAT much.

Congrats Meryl you beast you.

Damn, teaching a Jeopardy winner is pretty awesome.

That's really cool and a huge accomplishment.

I tried out for teen Jeopardy in New York City once and I wasn't nearly smart enough, so I know how much it takes to even get on to the show let alone WIN it.

Also, on a side-note, WTF, I took computer classes for 3 years in my high school, including AP Comp Sci (the exam was really hard for me, if I had a teacher like you who knows what they are doing I probably would have done much better) last year, and there was never ONE girl. Just my luck.

Aug. 17, 2007 | 9:00 AM Ross responds:

Meryl was the only girl in the class. :) Which she handled with grace.

And I wasn't a very good teacher, so I doubt you would have fared better with me. I'd do a much better job teaching the class now, if I had to do it again... but my first time around wasn't too hot.

You must feel so proud.

How did she apply for it, and what is the process of accepting her?

Aug. 17, 2007 | 12:13 PM Jake says:

She looks pretty young. Is she like a genius?

Aug. 19, 2007 | 10:04 AM Ross responds:

Pretty much. She was definitely smarter than me, her teacher (a humbling experience).

I just started High School...damn. It's friggin' confusing at first. Anyhow, I think Jeopardy is the most boring show on the world, but winning it must take a LOT of intelligence. Which I aint not gots a lot of, i reckons.

And I bet she'll spend it all on fried chicken and watermelon.

Aug. 19, 2007 | 10:05 AM Ross responds:

What's that supposed to mean?

What are you talking about?
I had you for Algebra, and I thought you did an excellent job at teaching it. You don't give yourself enough credit! You were just screwed with the kids that were assigned to your class. (my brother ;) )

The students you had just took advantage at the fact that you were a first year teacher. You probably would do a better job today because you would know how to handle the crappy behavior of some of your students ...(Dan)

FYI
Even today people who had you as remember you as one of their favorite teachers.
